The Connie West Community Garden has done well this year. We harvested over 600 pounds of greens and veggies plus 1200 pounds of apples, pears and plums from Shorecrest (thank you Louann and Judith) and from near neighbors on Agate, Pickering, and Harstine Island. Barbara DiPirro handed out over 500 seed packets of veggies and flowers and an endless supply of dried herbs from our garden and hers.
This spring Joe Iacobazzi, Ted Berry, and Sean Wood built a fence around the garden lot. This fence will protect our weekly market and fence climbing veggies from the growing herd of wandering deer. Ted added springs to the gate so they are self closing. This should protect the produce even if we are a little careless.
At present we are covering the south and east areas around the garden proper with cardboard and chips to clear the area of crab grass and weeds. Later on we will be expanding our fruit tree orchard in this park-like space; as well as, creating a colorful native plant wind break on the far south fence.
Our goal for 2026 is to increase the garden abundance while improving the soil and growing environment. In addition to the fruit trees, we intend to increase our pollinator garden and add benches for the Shorecrest Community to sit and enjoy the space.
We invite community members to join us throughout the year. We have a wide variety of possibilities based on your interests and skills.
We can certainly use your help!
